Second Nature, 2016

Anthropocentrism, the belief that humans are the most significant beings over all others, is a problem that sits at the heart of climate change. It is our ethos and behaviour that has constructed a divide between Man and Nature, Us and Them. This series, Second Nature, aims to position something from nature that is often thought of as disgusting and inert alongside precious jewellery materials that are highly valued. Second Nature reveals ecology as a great chain of being, with a consideration of the simultaneity of connection and difference. It calls for an ethical imperative of love, to love nature as a whole, in order to disparage and disperse with the destructive driving force for climate change: anthropocentrism. It calls for the rediscovering of the value and beauty of all life, even those small creepy-crawlies that hide underfoot
